Chapter Two — Economic Opportunity and Justice:
Making Our Efforts Count
All the civic activities, especially those directed toward reducing poverty, drew upon the skills and disciplines that I had developed in building and expanding the business. To the thoughtful person with a little creativity, all such skills are transferable. In turn, I realized that a commitment to increasing economic opportunity and increasing participation by those who have been dealt a poor hand in life offer mutually reinforcing benefits possible only when everyone feels a sense of ownership, with a stake in the community. Applying practical career lessons and opening doors for civic opportunity to everyone strikes me as one of those primary articles of faith necessary to guide those who want to build and sustain a just and prosperous society.
