Chapter Six — Racial Justice: Making Room for All

So many of our elusive ideals go back to the basic principles of racial and social justice as outlined, but not fully enforced, in our founding documents: the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. I think our society is trying to promote equal opportunity, but there is so much more to be done. With each year that passes, we all should ask whether this year will be the one when we determine the need for much-needed renewal of America’s commitment to justice, fairness and the rule of law. Indeed, the answer is up to us. We cannot rely on the wisdom or courage of a divided political leadership to provide unerring guidance. We cannot count on the simple passage of time to heal the damage. We have to take matters into our own hands and make the defense of freedom for everyone our own highly personal mission where we live: at the local level.
