Chapter Four — Health: Ensuring Our Common Wellness

My experience in community action agencies raised my awareness of the critical need to incorporate a health care component in virtually all the undertakings aimed at broadly opening opportunity to all. In my service with the National Academy of Sciences, I had access not only to ground-breaking studies but also to the researchers who produced them, advocating years ago such vitally important advances as adopting preventive health strategies and instituting a system of universal health care. Many people’s hopes and dreams got stalled in the political traffic jam, and I came to realize then how crucial a mass movement is to motivating and sustaining broad public support for doing the right thing.
